silly things in the yard

The magic tree. Many times I wish I could just dissappear into the world in that hole in the tree. What? That's not really a hole in the tree? Its a mirror? Well. Damn.

This I try to do as much as possible. Especially now that I am plagued by anxiety attacks. Laugh. Breathe. Repeat.

It was somebody's lovely chandelier..but apparantly somebody gave it to the thrift shop...which is how it ended up in my hands....to become...perhaps a terrarium? The "guts" part may become a candle holder if I can figure out how to get rid of the light bulb holder-thingies. The glass is quite nice. Beveled even. Looks like it needs a little E.T. standing by it..

Nope, not bronze. These are the real thing. DOEreen is in the front, the surviving twin, Pete, behind her, and possibly the twin's daddy bringing up the rear. This is not the buck who hung out here all summer. Tripod was here a few days ago but this fellow bounced across the road Monday morning and took up where Tripod left off. Why oh why don't they decide to eat all that Chasmanthe?

Perhaps you've stated in a past blog - but how large is your garden area? Where do the deer come and go from? Do you have a neighborhood reputation for having a unique (special) garden? I'm amazed at the variety of things you have going on... good for you!

I've got the original 2.5 acres that my parents bought in 1938. We never had deer on the place until a few years ago. Too many homes being built near the river..poor things have nowhere else to go..over-population, no predators (other than humans in autos)..There are still a few large, undeveloped lots in the neighborhood.
Still. I'd rather have uninvited four legged critters wandering through my yard than 2-legged ones.

The only critters that were on my parents property were quail, pheasants, jack rabbets and magpies. There were few trees, a number of shrubs and about an acre of native grasses that were tall and tough.

I've seen a quail 2x since I've been back (12 yrs now. OMG)but zero pheasant on the place. They were both fairly common in the 50's and 60's still. No bunnies. Magpies are still around but in fewer numbers thanks to West Nile. We didn't have squirrels or wild turkeys when I left in '65 but there are lots of them now. No turkeys on this place though..
